Intention Statement:
Packer block is an enrichment opportunity designed to help students develop the skills that are highly prized by employers and college admissions representatives. Packer block is 30 minutes of dedicated time to help students practice and develop skills such as: Leadership, communication, critical thinking, creativity, citizenship, collaboration. Packer block supports the Packer Focus Model: Learning Matters, Community Matters, Culture Matters!
Logistics of Packer Block:
Students will return to the same designated teacher daily from 10:36 am to 11:06 am (directly after 2nd block). These Packer Block teacher assignments will remain the same throughout a student’s career at Smithfield High School. For example, if a teacher is assigned to a group of 9th grade students this semester they will continue meeting with the same group following them each year through grades 9-12. Teachers will also be responsible for any class sponsor activity their Packer Block students are assigned.
Opportunities of Packer Block:
Packer Block will serve as an embedded time to achieve the teachings of the seven habits of highly effective teens, academic enrichment, individualized or group student pull out for intervention/remediation, club activities, and other school events. The administrative team will provide a framework with suggested lessons for each week to provide teachers with material to teach the seven highly effective habits to students.

Today, we talked about Habit 6 which talks about Synergy. Students were in a plane crash and stranded on a deserted island. They had to individually chose 12 items from around the classroom that they would want on their island. Then they paired up and created another list. Synergy is about producing a 3rd alternative - not my way, not your way, but a third way that is better. We then, as a class, made the list in the picture and numbered them in order of importance.
The month of October focuses on Digital Citizenship and Bullying. Today, students learned how to give kind, specific, and helpful feedback as they critiqued selfies that they drew of themselves. Tomorrow, they will redraw their selfies using the feedback given to them.
Packer Block was involved in hallway decorating for HOMECOMING WEEK! Students did a great job executing an idea by another class. I don't know if we won but we definitely had a good idea.
